Der schottisch-niederländische Soldat John Gabriel Stedman (1744-1797) war 1773 bis 1777 mit den niederländischen Kolonialtruppen in Surinam stationiert, wo seine Aufgabe u. a. darin bestand, aufständische und entlaufende Sklaven zu bekämpfen und einzufangen. Sein auf seinen Tagebucheintragungen fussender, aufrüttelnder Bericht schildert in ungeschönter Weise die Grausamkeit und Ungerechtigkeit, mit der gegen die Betroffenen verfahren wurde. "The field of (Stedman's) curiosity embraced not only all branches of natural history, but also economical and social conditions. His descriptions of the cruelties practiced upon the negroes, and of the moral deterioriation resulting to their masters, forms one of the most vivid indictments of slavery that have ever been penned." First edition of the important account by Stedman, a Scottish Soldier in the Dutch colonial army in the 1770s who was deployed to fight and hunt the revolted negro slaves in Surinam and recorded his impressions and observations in his diary. With engr. frontispiece, 2 engr. titles with vignette, 2 folding engr. maps and 78 engr. plates (2 folding) partly by William Blake, depicting flora and fauna, views, customs of the natives, but also the cruelties and various types of punishment against the slaves. 2 volumes.
