Schöner Tafelband zur wohl zweiten Ausgabe dieser großartigen Sammlung. Die Originalausgabe erschien 1796-1812. Es gibt neben der Quarto- auch eine Folio-Ausgabe bei der die Tafeln in 2 Zuständen (koloriert und nicht koloriert) vorkommen. "This work .. gives a comprehensive account of the birds of South Africa, based on levaillant's personal experiences and the collections he made during his journeys in that region" (Anker). - Die schönen Tafeln wurden von C. Fissart und Perée nach Zeichnungen von J. F. Lebrecht Reinold gestochen. Mit 5 Bll. Tafelverzeichnis von alter Hand am Ende.

EINBAND: Dunkelgrüner Maroquinband des 20. Jhs. im Stil der Zeit mit Rückenvergoldung. 35,5 : 25,5 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Folge von 293 (von 300) numerierten kolorierten Kupfertafeln (darunter 2 doppelblattgroß und 3 gefaltet). - KOLLATION: 5 Vortitel und 5 Titelbll. - ZUSTAND: Ohne die Tafeln 28, 31, 79, 92, 289, 291 und 293. - Stellenw. stockfl. (überwieg. im Randbereich), wenige Taf. etw. gebräunt. Kanten leicht berieben.

Almost complete table volume, rare to this extent, based on Levaillant's personal collections during his travels in Africa, his most important work. Series of 293 (of 300) numbered colored copper plates (including 2 double-sheet and 3 folded). At the end with 5 index leaves by old . 20th cent. dark green morocco in the style of the time with gilt spine. 35.5 : 25.5 cm. - Without tables 28, 31, 79, 92, 289, 291 and 293. - Here and there foxed (mostly in the margins), a few plates slightly browned. Edges minim. rubbed.
