Der wenig bekannte Kartenmacher Johannes Metellus, der die Karten für die Kölner Ausgaben von Giovanni Boteros Theatrum principum orbis universi schuf, griff für Iaponia regnum als erster auf die ganz neuartige, durch Ortelius 1595 für sein Theatrum orbis terrarum nach Informationen des portugiesichen Mathematikers und Jesuiten Luis Teixeira geschaffene Darstellung Japans zurück. Dieser sogenannte Ortelius-Teixeira-Typus markierte einen Wendepunkt und revolutionierte die Darstellung Japans in der europäischen Kartographie. - "The French cartographer Jean Matal, who worked primarily in Germany under his Latin name, created the maps for the German edition (of Boteros Theatrum ) following the model of the Theatrum of Ortelius, whom he knew personally. His map of Japan is the earliest known copy of Teixeira's map, which had appeared in Ortelius the previous year" (Walter S. 188). - Mit Darstellung Koreas als Insel. Umseitig deutscher Text "Der König von Japonia" mit Signatur "R".

- ZUSTAND: Etwas gebräunt und mit leichtem Plattenton, in den breiten Rändern außen etwas (wasser-)fleckig. Geglättet, Mittelfalte verso fachmännisch verstärkt.
