Seltene Abschrift des Opus Imperfectum in Matthaeum, das im Mittelalter dem Kirchenlehrer Johannes Chrysostomus zugeschrieben wurde und daher in zahlreichen Handschriften überliefert ist. Erst Erasmus von Rotterdam hat dessen Autorschaft bestritten. Vermutet wird, daß der Verfasser ein arianischer Theologe war und etwa Mitte des 5. Jahrhunderts am Rande des Röm. Reiches diese Erläuterungen in lateinischer Sprache niederschrieb. Das Werk ist der "umfangreichste und detaillierteste Kommentar über das erste Evangelium, das die lat. Antike uns hinterlassen hat" (Dict. Spir., zit. im Verfasserlex. d. MA XI, 766). - "The Opus Imperfectum is not in the first place a polemical work: the author tries to give a good exegetical commentary according to the standards of his time. He complains thus often about the general hostile climate against the Arians, rather than theorizing about what the general tenets of the Arians were. Die Handschrift enthält die fortlaufend numerierten Kapitel ("Homilen") I-XL, beginnend auf Fol. 1 verso und endend auf Fol. 143 recto. Zu Anfang (Fol. 1 recto) mit Kapitelverzeichnis und Prologus: "Prologus in opus sequens Omeliae beati Johannis Chrysostomi super Mattheum de opere imperfecto". Auf Fol. 143 recto die Schlußzeilen: "Explicit ... expositionis super Matthaeum operis imperfecti beati Chrysostomi deo gratias" - Die letzten 3 Seiten von einer anderen zeitgenöss. Hand ausgeführt.

Zustand: Erste 3 Bll. etw. gebräunt, Ränder tls. gering fleckig. Einbd. beschabt, Messingbeschläge und Schließen entfernt, ob. RDeckel noch mit Montierungsspuren eines Kettenbeschlags. Insgesamt guterhaltene und vollständige Handschrift in einem zeitgenöss. Holzdeckelband, Titel mit altem Besitzervermerk des Karmeliterklosters Würzburg.
Complete Latin manuscript of the "Opus imperfectum on Matthaeum" which had been ascribed to church father Johannes Chrysostomus in the Middle Ages and was first disproved by Desiderius Erasmus. Nowadays researchers assume the origin of the work in the middle of the 5th century, written by an Arian theologian. - South Germany (?), around 1475, written before the editio princeps 1487 by Koelhoff in Cologne. 146 leaves (= 143 ll. with writing and 3 blank ll. at the end). Sheet size 28 : 21 cm. Black brown ink by one hand in even Gothic Bastarda with abbreviations. 2 columns, ca. 46 lines. Rubricated throughout, with numerous red lombards, text beginnings underlined in red, paragraph marks in red and red chapter count in headline. Neatly executed on strong paper with watermark tower (Briquet 12442). - Contemp. wooden boards over 4 double bands with brown leather covering and label. The manuscript contains continuously numbered homilies from I-XL, beginning on verso of fol. 1 and ending with explicit on recto of fol. 143. With prologue and chapter index at the beginning (recto of fol. 1). - First 3 ll. somewhat browned, minor staining to margins in places. Binding scraped, brass fittings and clasps removed, with mounting remains of a chain fitting on upper rear board. All in all well-preserved and complete manuscript in a contemp. wooden boards binding, title with old ownership entry of the Würzburg Carmelites monastery.
