IV-VII (mit zus. 17 Kupfertafeln) doppelt eingebunden. - "Ruysch, professor of anatomy at Leyden and Amsterdam, is notable for his method of injecting the vessels. The recipe for the material used by Ruysch has remained a secret. He gave the first description of bronchial blood vessels and vascular plexuses of the heart, demonstrated the valves of the lymphatics, and made a great number of other important discoveries in anatomy" (Garrison/M.). - Die prachtvollen und sorgfältig ausgeführten Kupfer (darunter 3 gr. surreal anmutende Kompositionen aus menschlichen Organen und Gliedmaßen, gestochen von C. Hyberts) beruhen auf Ruyschs berühmter Sammlung anatomischer Präparate , die er 1717 Peter dem Großen, einer seiner fleißigsten Schüler, für 30.000 Gulden verkaufte (als Kuriosum sei erwähnt, daß nur ein Teil dieser Sammlung damals in Petersburg anlangte, da die Matrosen unterwegs den Spiritus aus den Flaschen ausgetrunken hatten). "For whimsical orginality and exquisite delicacy of detail, the plates drawn by Fr. Ruysch deserve a special mention. Skeletons posed in quaintest attitudes, with appropriate mottoes of the memento mori variety attached, surrounded by strange reptiles, stuffed monsters, dried plants, and deep-sea creatures, constituded the favorite decorative scheme of the old Dutch antatomist, whose mortuary humors have been sublimated in Leopardi's dialogue Dialogo di Federico Ruysch e delle sue mummie" (Garrison, Hist. of. Med. S. 251).

IV-VII double bound in with 17 plates. - II: With engr. title and 7 folding copperplates. Contemp. half calf (bound differently). - Partly stained, ca. 50 leaves and 1 folding plate stronger brownstained, ca. 10 folding plates with small marginal tear (2 backed). Binding rubbed, 1 outer joint torn.
