Erste Ausgabe, zeitgleich erschien eine gekürzte Oktavausgabe. - Bericht des Marineoffiziers John Hunter (1737-1821), der 1787 als Kommandant der Siriu s als Teil der legendären "First Fleet", der britischen Expedition zur Gründung einer Strafkolonie unter dem Kommando von Arthur Phillips, nach Australien kam und 1790-92 im Zuge seiner Rückreise nach England zahlr. melanesische Inseln entdeckte und wiederentdeckte. "With his encouragement, the exploration of the coastline of Australia made rapid progress, and the early discoveries of Flinders and Bass owe much to him. His journal is a very valuable work on the early history of the English settlement in Australia" (Hill). - 1795-1800 kehrte Hunter als Nachfolger von Phillips als Vize-Admiral und zweiter Gouverneur von New South Wales nach Australien zurück. - Die Tafeln zeigen Landschaften, Eingeborene, Muscheln u. a.

EINBAND: Geglätteter Lederband der Zeit mit Rückenvergoldung und farbigem Rückenschild. 31 : 25,5 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit gestochenem Porträt, gestochenem Titel mit Vignette, 4 Kupferkarten (2 gefaltet) und 11 Kupfertafeln. - KOLLATION: 8 Bll., 583 S. - ZUSTAND: Etw. stockfleckig, Ränder leicht angestaubt, im hinteren Drittel mit Stoßspur im Schnitt, Porträt und Titel unten mit kl. hinterlegten Randläsuren, 1 Faltkarte mit Einriß. Einband berieben, Gelenke tlw. eingerissen, unterer Rücken und Rückendeckel gelöst.

First quarto edition, published at the same time as an abridged octavo edition. Hunter's journal about his adventures and discoveries as commander of the "Sirius", one of the ships of the "First Fleet" 1787 to Australia, and of his journey back to England. With engr. portrait, engr. title with vignette, 4 engr. maps (2 folding) and 11 engr. plates. Contemp. smooth calf with gilt decoration and label on spine. - Somewhat foxed, paper edges slightly dusty, with scrapemark across the paper edges in the last third, title and portrait with small rebacked defects to bottom margin, 1 folding map with tear. Binding scraped, joints partly torn, bottom part of spine and rear board detached.(R)
