"The beautiful colored plates are executed in hand-colored lithography" (Jean Anker)

- "The section on the island of Laysan opens with a historical survey of the ornithological exploration of the island and is followed by the diary of Henry Palmer written during his stay on the island in 1891. Palmer's journey of collection, which lasted from December, 1890, to August, 1893, and which yielded a total of 1832 birds, forms the basis of the present work."
