Die ohnehin wichtige Standardmonographie liegt hier in einem besonderen Exemplar vor, das mit 8 eigenhändigen Orig.-Zeichnungen und -Photographien zum Thema angereichert wurde (davon 7 auf den Vorsätzen und eine im Text). Des weiteren liegt ein gestempelter und frankierter Orig.-Briefumschlag an den irischen Altertumsforscher und Sammler Robert Day in Cork (1836-1914) bei, enthaltend 4 umfangreiche eigenhändige Briefe (davon 1 datiert 6. April 1904) von H. G. Robley an ihn.
"Robley wrote two books on New Zealand, Moko or Maori Tattooing is the more outstanding. 'His acknowledged object,' it has been said, 'was to put together a text to support the specialised record he had drawn of tattoo patterns and of his collection of dried heads. On these two subjects he regarded himself as an authority, a claim not to be disputed provided we bear in mind that his awareness was that of a curio collector, and not that of a scholar'" (William John Phillips in Encyclopedia of New Zealand).

With 180 illustrations in the text. From the library of Robert Day, Myrtle Hill House in Cork (two different bookplates on front endpaper). - Binding somewhat rubbed in places, inner joints loosened and slightly torn.
