Die Seiten 213 bis 233 enthalten das Beispiel eines navigatorischen Journals unter dem Titel Journal of a voyage from England to Madeira, in his Majesty's Ship the Melampus (under) John Poole, Commander, kept by James Jonathan Fraser, Master's Mate, 1772, mit Navigationsangaben vom 2. bis 28. Juli 1772. Solche Journale waren Bestandteil der Ausbildung und wurden auf Grundlage wirklicher Fahrten meist fiktiv-modellhaft verfaßt. Die französische Fregatte HMS Melampus (oder Melampe) wurde 1757 von der Royal Navy gekapert und 1771 abgewrackt. Möglicherweise schrieb der Master's Mate (Unteroffizier für Navigation) J. J. Fraser das Journal in Erinnerung einer Fahrt auf diesem Schiff. - Deckel mit Gebrauchsspuren, innen sehr gut erhalten.

Very fine neat and legible maritime navigation manual, ca. 1772, belonging almost certainly to James Jonathan Fraser, Master's Mate of the frigate HMS Melampus. 243 pages, written in brown ink on paper (watermark 'G.R.' surmounted by a crown) with underlinings and frames in red ink. Attractatively illustrated throughout with numerous vignette watercolor diagrams and charts, 1 full-page watercolor map of the Western Ocean from Iceland to the Canary Isles and one full-page compass rose. 19th cent. half calf (boards worn). Folio. - Inside well-preserved.
